Author/Artist: Third Eye Blind Title: Cry Cry Cry Album: unreleased Transcribed by: Tim Saler for StephanJenkins.com Email: tim@stephanjenkins.com Tuning: E A D G B E Admittedly, this song is strange to say the least. The timing in this song itself confuses me to the point where, when I tried to re-record the song with my friend, we couldn't even figure out where the song actually started (if you ignore the garbage like Stephan saying "Johnny Cash" over and over, then our good friend Merle ranting on and on). So, rather than attempt to write this out in "standard" tab format with the six strings and numbers, I'll do my best to explain to you, the reader, what is actually going on in this song. So, let's begin at the very beginning. -=Intro=- While Stephan is going through his "Johnny Cash" spasm and Merle is ranting away, Tony (and Arion, but we won't get into bass in this particular tome) is droning on an F5 chord. Assuming this song was recorded in standard tuning (and it may not be, because I've played it in Open D and it sounded alright), it sounds most accurate as 13xxxx or 133xxx. Either or, though an F5 higher on the fretboard just doesn't sound as good in the context of the song. This is basically the entire intro, aside from harmonics. I can't figure out for the life of me what the harmonics are, but I think they are the E, A, D, and G strings just being fooled with. The B string at fret 12 is not actually in key, so I don't touch it. Heck, I try to avoid the harmonics altogether. -=Verse=- Now we get to the verse. The verse is also a droning F5 for a line and a half, then it switches to a C5 (x355xx) for half of a line. Moving back to the F5 for one more line, we automagically hop into the chorus. -=Chorus=- The chorus is just bundles of fun. It is G5, Bbmaj, Bbmin, F5. Bb / A#, however you want to name it. I think it sounds best as 355xxx, 6887xx, 6886xx, 133xxx. I prefer using three strings on my power chords, though I know a lot of people prefer two. Do whatever is most comfortable and familiar to you. -=Alternate Verse=- There's an alternate verse thinger that's in there, where Stephan goes "You're gonna cry, cry, cry, and you'll cry alone when everyone's forgotten and you're left on your own." This is a pretty cool verse but you can get tripped up by its odd placement. It's played as F5, Bb5/A#5, F5, C5. It then moves into the chorus as usual. I play it as 133xxx, x133xx, 133xxx, x355xx. Move into the chorus as if it were a normal verse, with one exception mentioned below. -=Alternate Chorus=- Following the alternate verse, the Bbmin/A#min chord is removed and the entire chorus is shortened. It's simply G5, Bb5/A#5, F5. I play it as 355xxx, 688xxx, 133xxx. -=Harmonics=- I haven't a clue!! If you know what the harmonics are, by all means let me know. I've seen the show on PBS and watched Tony playing them. Strangely enough, they seem to be up around the 13th fret almost. Maybe the angle was weird and he was just all over the 12, since I didn't see a capo on the 1st fret (though I imagine it's highly possible with the chords in this song). Experiment around and see what you come up with. That's all I can tell you. :) -=Outro=- Drone on the F5 as usual. Simple as that. ;) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Good luck to you all on playing this really cool song. -Tim
