Museums are not for stuffy old
people, says Stephan Jenkins, lead singer of Third Eye
Blind, but are perfectly good places for young people to
hang out and learn.
"I don't see museums as
hoity-toity things -- they're healthy when they're filled
with boots and punk-rock hair, where you're looking for some
kind of radical experience," he said.
Yes, but have the trustees
been warned?
Jenkins and the band have
agreed to perform at the California Palace of the Legion of
Honor as part of a benefit for the Fine Arts Museums. The
event, which was set for Saturday, has been postponed. Phew
-- trustees now have time to prepare. The event will be
sponsored by ArtPoint, a group of young arts supporters that
wants to raise money for the new de Young Museum and bring
new patrons into the fold.
In museums, said Jenkins,
"You're eligible to get this perspective that lets you see
things in the rest of your life in a different way. It's
analogous to inspiration, and since I'm in the inspiration
business, that's invaluable to me."
